Representatives of Walmart Stores and Phillies Catcher Brian Schneider helped the Police Athletic League celebrate another successful season of Walmart PAL Baseball with a special closing ceremony on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. More than 100 participants from the program attended. 2010 marks the fourth consecutive year in which Walmart has sponsored the PAL Baseball program. On Saturday, June 26, local Walmart Stores helped raise $32,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation by hosting a ‘Fun in the Sun’ event for shoppers. Featuring lemonade stands built by Walmart associates at 72 locations, lemonade and paper lemons were sold with all proceeds benefiting the foundation dedicated to finding a cure for all kids with cancer. Fun in the Sun, launched and executed by students participating in Walmart’s college co-op program with Saint Joseph’s University, was a huge success in its inaugural year and will become an annual effort. The Philadelphia Business Journal released its annual corporate charitable contributor rankings for the Delaware Valley region recently and Walmart Stores ranks 5th among businesses for charitable giving in the Philadelphia-area. Based on data from the 2008 fiscal year, Walmart committed more than $3.1 million in cash and in-kind contributions to local charities. The company is one of two corporations not based in the Philadelphia-area to be listed among the Philadelphia Business Journal’s top ten charitable contributors.
