Oxford Walmart Hiring For Aug. 15 Opening

A new door to employment in southern Chester County has opened up with the construction of the Walmart Supercenter in the township, just north of Oxford Borough on Route 10.

The Company is hiring 300 associates, and by last count 842 people have already applied.

New store manager Anthony Smith, 30, said the hiring process will continue, even after the store opens on Aug. 15. To that end, Walmart has opened a hiring center on South Third Street in Oxford where prospective employees may fill out online applications at the bank of computers there. They may also apply online at the site Walmartstores.com.

Once the applications are submitted, they are reviewed by management personnel within 48 hours, after which applicants are called for interviews.

Smith said the applications he has seen are coming in from throughout the area, especially from Oxford, Kennett Square and Parkesburg, and Elkton and North East, Md.

“We try to get as many local people as we can,” he said.

There are plenty of positions to choose from, he added, including but not limited to cashiers, greeters, pharmacy professionals, bakers and vision center employees.

Smith said experience is of value in obtaining a job, but he is especially interested in hiring people who are “upbeat” and show an enthusiasm for the position.

“We have great benefits, and even after a year or 1,100 hours part-time employees can get benefits. With the 401(k) we match dollar-for-dollar up to 6 percent of salary and the employees get 10 percent discount on goods. We take care of our associates,” Smith said.

He should know. Twelve years ago he was an overnight stocker, who was then promoted to a department manager. He entered the management program in 2004, was promoted to an assistant manager, then a co-manager at the Parkesburg store. For the last 11 months he has been the manager of a New Jersey Walmart.
